From healthy 11-year-old to heart transplant survivor in 5 days
Within the span of five days in May, MiaBella Brickey went from a healthy, energetic and thriving 11-year-old child with a Black Belt in Soo Bahk Do, to a heart transplant survivor.
Mia, the daughter of Salt Lake City, UT
PDA clients Dr. Tom and Heidi Brickey suffered a very rare complication from what is likely to be a very common illness. The virus attacked Mia’s heart causing
Giant Cell Myocarditis, severe inflammation of the heart muscle. Her condition was so acute that she required an immediate heart transplant, which was performed on June 5th at the Primary Children's Hospital in Salt Lake City, just 8 days after she entered the hospital.
Tom and his team have been members of the PDA family since April 2007. His wife Heidi works part-time in the practice as a hygienist.
Mia is home!
The great news is Mia was released from the hospital on August 9th and is making progress every day. You can
follow Mia's progress at her Facebook page.
